St John's Primary School

St John's CEVC Primary School - Keynsham

Year 5

The term has started well and everyone has settled quickly into new groups and routines. We welcome two new pupils : Erin has joined us from St. Keyna and Amber has returned to St. John's after spending a couple of years living in Spain.

Our keyword in year 5 is 'initiative' and we aim to encourage children to be organised, take responsibility and think for themselves. This means being prepared for lessons e.g. P.E. kit, Reading record books, homework etc.

Homework books are collected in on Wednesdays and returned on Thursdays. P.E. will be every wed. and thurs. p.m.

We have had a busy start to the year including a fun run to raise funds for the N.S.P.C.C. a book X factor and a curriculum challenge day when we planned, built and designed a time machine. We had great fun working together!

There are lots of adults to help us. Mrs Simmonds and Mrs Singleton are the class teachers and Mrs Morton, Mrs Thomas and Mrs Luker are the L.S.A.'s. This year there will be additional intensive teaching programmes for some children with Mrs Backholer (maths) and Mrs Parrett (literacy).

Our creative curriculum approach linking subjects (where possible) seems to be very effective. Last term our topic was 'Children of  Time' and we have focused on Victorian childhood, written our own science fiction stories, and even made some of Mrs Beaton's recipes (thanks to Mrs Lucas). This term our topic is 'Journeys.'

We are looking forward to other ways of enjoying learning in year 5 and celebrating achievement with our 'star of the day' wristbands and badges.
